“Every child is an artist.” Pablo Picasso

Art and Design is a highly valued subject at Sutton Primary Academy and is interwoven into many parts of our creative curriculum. We believe that everyone is an artist!

We recognise that art has the power to inspire, educate, move and motivate. Our children are supported in becoming confident to express themselves and explore mood, feelings, imagination, and their individuality.

Through exciting and engaging lessons, we strive to ignite passion and interest in different forms of Art and Design. Our children have the opportunity to experience the key elements including colour, shape, texture, pattern and line, in both 2D and 3D form with reference to past and present-day artists and architects. We also enjoy participating in specialist workshops linked to specific topics or our subject themed weeks which is displayed around the school. The skills we develop in Art link directly to:

  • Drawing and sketching
  • Painting
  • Printing
  • Textiles
  • 3D sculptures and form
  • Collage
  • Use of ICT
  • Knowledge of specific artists, architects and galleries.

Our children are encouraged to be confident and show a critical awareness through their artwork. We encourage the children to discuss, evaluate and reflect on their pieces and those of famous artists.

We are committed to providing all children with the opportunities to engage and succeed in the Arts, regardless of their background, language and or special needs through the provision of unique learning experiences and high quality, differentiated teaching. We believe by providing opportunities for all that our learners will become resilient, independent learners today and in the future.
